Surf therapy - How it works - FAQ's

What is surf therapy?
Surf. therapy, according to the International Surf Therapy Organisation is: 'The use of surfing as a vehicle for delivering intentional, inclusive, population-specific, and evidenced-based therapeutic structures to promote psychological, physical, and psychosocial well-being.'

Surf therapy is a type of therapy that combines mental health benefits from surfing with evidence-informed psychological support and body-awareness. It is more than just learning to surf; it is about using the ocean as a co-facilitator in a healing process.

Through guided surf sessions, movement, breathwork and reflection, participants are invited to regulate their nervous system, increase self-confidence, release stored stress or trauma and reconnect with joy and presence.

Surf therapy can be particularly supportive for the following populations: individuals who are experiencing stress and burnout, as well as stress/disorder manifestations like anxiety, ADHD, high sensitivity and emotional overwhelm. The natural environment of the ocean and its water also provide consistency, challenge and calm, ultimately guiding participants back to their natural state of flow, both physically and emotionally.

Surf therapy is not about performance; it is about the connection to yourself, your body, others and to the healing power of nature.

How does surf therapy work?
Surf therapy is the combination of the healing power of the ocean, physical movement and mindful support all in a structured, yet playful way. It is a somatic approach, which in very simple form, helps to soothe the nervous system, process emotions and develop resilience by learning from the experience in the ocean.

The participants receive guided surf sessions in which they explore riding the waves (of life) at their own pace and are led by trained trauma-informed facilitators who create a safe environment. The participant's movements of paddling, balancing, falling and trying again are representative of the inner journey of healing by facing fears, developing confidence and being present with challenges. By reflecting on their experiences after the sessions, participants gain more awareness about the way they think, act and feel in daily life and what they long for in contact with others.

The natural rhythm of the ocean has calming and regulating properties for the body and mind, and help reduce stress, anxiety and emotional overload. Surfing also produces dopamine and other neuro-chemicals that increase mood, motivation and cultivate the feeling of connection and belonging.

Surf therapy is often used together with other reflective practices, such as sharing circles, somatic exercises or mindfulness to deepen the integration or self-awareness.

To summarise: Surf therapy helps a participant reconnect with their true nature, through movement, breath, community and the healing energy of the ocean.

How does surf therapy improve mental health?
Surfing supports mental health by engaging both the body and mind in ways that reduce stress, increase emotional regulation and enhance overall well-being.

The physical activity of surfing releases endorphins and dopamine. They are brain chemicals that naturally elevate mood and help regulate emotions. The rhythmic movement of paddling and riding waves promotes a sense of flow, focus and presence, which can ease symptoms of anxiety, depression and burnout.

Being in the ocean stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps calm the body’s stress response. Cold water immersion, salt air and the vastness of the sea also contribute to mental clarity and emotional grounding.

Beyond the physical effects, surfing offers emotional growth through challenge, resilience and play. Facing waves requires courage, adaptability, and persistence. These qualities when transferred  into daily life,  support psychological healing.

When practiced in a safe, supportive environment, like in surf therapy session or at a surf therapy retreat, surfing becomes more than a sport: it becomes a path to reconnection with  yourself, it cultivates confidence and inner peace.

Is surfing good therapy?
Surfing is a powerful form of therapy because it brings together movement, nature, breath and mindfulness. It helps you connect with your body, calm your mind and release tension or stress. The ocean supports emotional regulation, while the act of surfing helps you build confidence, resilience and joy.

In surf therapy, it is not about performance, it is about presence. That is what makes it such a healing and empowering experience.

How does surfing improve mental health?
Surfing helps your mental health by calming your mind, boosting your mood and helping you feel more present.

When you move your body in the water, your brain releases feel-good chemicals like dopamine and endorphins. This can help reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, or sadness. Being in the ocean also helps your nervous system relax. The sound of the waves, the salt water and the rhythm of the sea all have a soothing effect.

Surfing invites you to focus on the moment. It teaches you to breathe, to try again and to trust your body. Every wave is different, so you learn to adapt, build confidence and enjoy the process even when it is challenging.

Most of all, surfing brings joy and a sense of freedom. And when shared with others in a safe and supportive setting, it can help you feel more connected to yourself, to nature and to those around you.

Surf Therapy Retreat

What is a surf therapy retreat?
A surf therapy retreat is a unique and holistic experience that combines the healing power of the ocean with therapeutic practices, surfing, movement and community. It is designed to support your mental, emotional and physical well-being. No matter if you are dealing with stress, burnout, anxiety, ADHD, high sensitivity, or simply longing to reconnect with yourself, a surf therapy retreat can support you during difficult times.

At a surf therapy retreat, you do not need to be a skilled surfer. The focus is not on performance, but on presence, play, self-discovery and self realisation. Through gentle surf coaching, body-oriented therapy, mindfulness, sharing circles and time in nature, you are guided back to your true rhythm. At your own pace, with fellow tribemembers to support you.

It is a space to let go, to grow, to feel joy and flow again.

For who is a surf therapy retreat?
Surf Therapy Retreat is for anyone over 18 years of age who wants to work on their personal development in a nature and beach environment. Whether you would like to (learn to) surf or not, you can become part of the surf tribe we create during our weeklong retreat.

Invitations go out to people as well who are in, or facing a burn-out (if you can feel it coming!) and people who are trying to deal with ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, loneliness, grieve,  compulsive behaviour or dependence (whether that is substance use, sports, food etc.).

“I never thought the sea would give me so much peace and joy. Even at times when I really did not know how to proceed in life. With Sabine from Surf Therapy Travel I could completely be myself. The different experiments near and in the ocean and the bodywork techniques next to a Gestalt basis helped me raise my awareness. I now feel more at ease and in peace with myself. I am more self compassionate and I no longer experience anxiety. I highly recommend surf therapy! “
